COSHH (LEV) Inspections
COSHH Local Exhaust Ventilation Inspections
Safe Lee Inspection & Consultancy provides thorough examination and testing of Local Exhaust Ventilation systems in accordance with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002.
Based in Manchester, we carry out COSHH LEV inspections across the North West and support multi site clients throughout the UK. All inspections are completed by a competent person, with clear reports issued following examination.
What Is COSHH?
COSHH refers to the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002. These regulations are designed to protect workers from health risks arising from exposure to hazardous substances at work.
COSHH places duties on employers to prevent or adequately control exposure to substances that can cause ill health, including dusts, fumes, vapours, gases, and mists.
What Is LEV Under COSHH?
Local Exhaust Ventilation, commonly referred to as LEV, is an engineering control used to capture and remove hazardous substances from the air at source before they can be inhaled by workers.
Where LEV is used to control exposure under COSHH, Regulation 9 requires that systems are thoroughly examined and tested at suitable intervals to ensure they remain effective.
Who Needs COSHH LEV Inspections?
COSHH LEV inspections apply to any workplace where Local Exhaust Ventilation is used to control exposure to hazardous substances.
This includes employers and duty holders operating LEV systems in industries such as:
-
Manufacturing
-
Construction
-
Engineering workshops
-
Laboratories
-
Garages and vehicle repair facilities
If LEV is relied upon as a control measure, it must be examined and tested in line with COSHH requirements.
What Systems Are Covered Under COSHH Regulation 9?
COSHH Regulation 9 applies to a wide range of Local Exhaust Ventilation systems, including:
-
Welding fume extraction systems
-
Dust extraction systems
-
Spray booth extraction
-
Laboratory fume cupboards
-
Grinding and cutting extraction systems
-
Oil mist and vapour extraction systems
Both fixed and portable LEV systems are subject to examination where they are used as a control measure for hazardous substances.
COSHH LEV Examination Intervals
COSHH requires that LEV systems are thoroughly examined and tested at suitable intervals to ensure they continue to control exposure effectively.
In most workplaces, LEV systems are examined at least every 14 months. Shorter intervals may be required where conditions are severe, systems are heavily used, or where specified by risk assessment.
Re examination is also required following significant modification, damage, or change in use.
Competent Person
Inspections & Reporting
COSHH LEV examinations are carried out by a competent person with the knowledge and experience required to assess system performance.
Following inspection and testing, a clear report is issued detailing the condition of the LEV system, test results, and any defects or actions required to maintain compliance with COSHH Regulation 9.
COSHH LEV Inspection FAQs
How often does LEV need to be tested under COSHH?
LEV systems are typically examined at least every 14 months. Shorter intervals may apply depending on use and conditions.
Is LEV testing a legal requirement?
Yes. Where LEV is used to control exposure to hazardous substances, COSHH Regulation 9 requires thorough examination and testing.
Do portable extraction units need COSHH inspection?
Yes. Portable LEV units are subject to COSHH if they are used as a control measure for hazardous substances.
Do you carry out COSHH risk assessments?
COSHH inspections focus on the examination and testing of LEV systems. Risk assessments remain the responsibility of the employer or duty holder.
What documentation is provided after inspection?
A report of thorough examination and testing is issued, detailing system condition, test results, and any actions required.
